Charm Industrial accelerates carbon removal operations with Claude

Charm and Anthropic Logos

Charm Industrial uses Claude to transform their carbon removal operations, from accelerating scientific research to automating verification processes critical to reversing climate change.

With Claude, Charm Industrial:

  • Reduced carbon credit verification time from 3-6 months to just days
  • Accelerated geological site research and permitting processes
  • Automated marketing operations through AI agents

Managing massive data complexity in carbon removal

Charm Industrial removes carbon from the atmosphere by converting agricultural and forestry residues—like corn stover and wildfire mitigation thinnings—which contain carbon that plants capture from the air. They use specialized fast pyrolysis machines to transform biomass into stable carbon-rich bio-oil that's then permanently stored in underground wells, overseen by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Charm Industrial sells carbon removal credits—verified certificates that represent one ton of CO₂ permanently removed from the atmosphere—to companies seeking to offset their emissions. With customers like Stripe, JP Morgan and Google relying on these credits, Charm processes tens of thousands of data points across dozens of different systems and hundreds of components for every ton of carbon removed.

"We collect everything from meter readings on our pyrolyzers to truck scale tickets, all of which must be meticulously tracked and verified for carbon credit certification," said Kevin Niparko, Head of Product at Charm Industrial.

This data complexity compounds across their operations: site selection requires analyzing fragmented geological databases across state and county systems, while their chemistry lab generates thousands of experimental data points needing rapid analysis.

The traditional approach to managing this data created a significant bottleneck. Carbon audits that took three to six months meant work completed in January wouldn't generate revenue until mid-year. Manual data collection and processing also increased the risk of delays in identifying errors, making corrections difficult and costly.

"To achieve our ambitious mission and create the global impact we're targeting, we need to leverage AI and new technologies to scale effectively," Niparko explained.

Choosing Claude for intelligence and speed

After evaluating multiple AI models, Charm chose Claude for what Niparko described as "the optimal balance of intelligence and speed." The decision came down to Claude's ability to process diverse data types accurately and deliver results quickly.

"Claude delivers exactly what we need—high intelligence that consistently provides accurate answers without the long wait times we've seen with other models," Niparko explained.

This balance proved critical for Charm's diverse use cases, from analyzing complex geological surveys to generating code for system migrations.

How Claude powers carbon removal at scale

Most notably, Claude has helped Charm address one of their most pressing operational challenges: carbon credit verification. Their automated verification system reduced audit completion time from months to days, enabling faster revenue recognition and improved cash flow.

This acceleration benefits Charm's customers too. Major corporations purchasing carbon removal credits receive their verified credits more quickly, allowing them to meet their sustainability commitments on schedule. The improved data quality strengthens trust—critical when customers are paying for a removal product they'll never physically see, but which can be tracked and measured.

Charm also integrated Claude across their operations through several key implementations:

  • Accelerated research and development: Charm's chemistry lab uses Claude to design experiments and analyze results faster. For geological research, Claude assembles fragmented data from state and county databases to identify potential carbon storage sites, dramatically reducing the time needed to evaluate new sites and prepare permitting documentation.
  • Field operations support: Charm has integrated Claude into Slack, giving field operators instant access to operational knowledge. Workers can query safety protocols, maintenance procedures, and technical specifications directly where they work.
  • Marketing automation: Charm uses marketing operations agents powered by Claude to manage marketing backlogs, generate blog post drafts, and support outbound communications, automating tasks that previously required dedicated staff time.

Importantly, Claude helps Charm's team focus on their core mission.

"We've eliminated much of the routine work that consumed our scientists' time, allowing them to focus on advancing our carbon removal technology,” said Niparko.

In fact, six months ago, Charm's leadership launched a company-wide AI initiative that transformed their culture. Now employees actively share AI discoveries in dedicated Slack channels, with teams across the organization experimenting with new use cases and learning from each other's successes.

Building the future of climate technology

Looking ahead, Charm sees AI as essential to scaling climate solutions globally. The company envisions integrating AI models directly into their manufacturing operations, helping injection teams work faster and collect field data with minimal manual input. This vision extends beyond office work to the heart of their carbon removal operations.

As Charm expands their fleet of pyrolyzers and develops new carbon storage sites nationwide, Claude will continue powering the operational improvements needed to scale carbon removal technology. "AI models like Claude are enabling climate tech companies to scale at the pace required to address climate change effectively,” reflected Niparko.

With Claude accelerating operations, Charm is demonstrating how AI can amplify human efforts to reverse climate change, allowing more companies to join the carbon removal movement and create measurable impact on our planet's future.
